Faith Formation Commission

This group of adults is concerned with the promotion and enhancement among all ages of  parishioners to understand their faith and spiritually grow so they can live a healthy Christian life through the sacraments (including the Rite of Catholic Initiation of Adults [RCIA]) , Catholic traditions and missionary love of God and neighbor.

The group meets on the third Tuesday of the month at 6:00 pm.  You are welcome to come and share with us your concerns and ideas. Do you hear a call to help in these endeavors?

Please contact Tim Kelley at 828-777-1514 to find out more.

The mission of the Faith Formation Commission is to promote knowledge and understanding of our faith among all ages so we can live a Christian life, follow Catholic teachings and traditions, and grow spiritually, encouraging intergenerational and multicultural experiences in order to build a strong community in Christ.

SJA's Faith Formation Coordinator works in conjunction with a group of excellent, devoted volunteer catechists to provide Sunday morning religious education to the children of the parish and to prepare them for the Sacraments of Reconciliation, Eucharist, and Confirmation, and for life as adult Catholics.

  Please contact Maria Eva Tabora

Are you presently not Catholic, but wondering what we as Catholics believe?  Whether you are thinking about becoming Catholic or are just curious, we have something for you.  Please talk to Father Dean (English) or Teresa Barrera (Spanish) for more information.  We also have adult Bible study currently going on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 while the children are in faith formation.  Come join us!

Catechist Recognition Process classes will be offered on Wednesdays this summer starting June 20 at 6:30 PM.  These classes will be offered in Spanish.  At the end of the summer, all catechists who attended these classes will receive official Catechist certification from the Diocese of Charlotte.

Have you ever felt called to help our children learn their faith?  We need several new catechists for classes beginning in the fall.  Please call Tim Kelley or Eva Tabora.

We need volunteer assistants for Children’s Liturgy of the Word.  During the Liturgy of the Word at Sunday Mass, one of our catechists presents the Scriptures to young children between the ages of 3 and 9 at their level.  We need adult assistants willing to be present and help the volunteer catechists.  No teaching will be required of these assistants.  We hope to get enough assistants so that no one is asked to help out more than once per month.  Please see Tim Kelley if you’re willing and interested.

Questions have come up recently regarding eligibility for Confirmation.  Children in 7th grade or older at the start of the school year will be eligible to begin the two-year Confirmation class.  Regardless of how many prior years of Faith Formation classes you have had, children are not eligible to begin this class until 7th grade.  Reception of the Sacraments of Baptism, Reconciliation, and Eucharist must be completed, and a Baptism certificate provided prior to receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation.

It is official – we have received our Confirmation date for 2018 from the Diocese!  Bishop Jugis will be here to preside over the Sacrament of Confirmation on Wednesday, October 17 at 6 pm.  All families are strongly encouraged to attend and support our Confirmandi.

In the event of winter weather, we will follow the schedule of Buncombe County Schools.  If they close or dismiss early on a Wednesday, there will be no Faith Formation classes that night.  If the bad weather starts after schools have let out, we will contact WLOS and there will be a message on the parish voice mail and Tim Kelley’s voice mail.
